Another snow day?

Sigh...

I guess the snow day calculator was correct!  It is snowing like mad outside my office window and we are yet again homebound.  Here in Jenison we do not have school so Evelyn and Abby got an early start on house cleaning!

I sent the kids home with homework folder ready for the weekend.  You'll notice when you look at the assignment sheet they are now assigned 35 minutes of reading per evening.  This is the last 5 minute bump for the year!  I hear such amazing stories at school about books, and characters, and facts learned.  Thank you for supporting this crucial homework!  I've seen a chart floating around the Internet lately that I'd like to add here.  It visually points out why reading at school AND at home is so important!  Take a look:

The chart really says it all.  Reading matters!

Reading at Home:
  • Find a comfortable place around the house that minimized distractions.  The couch, bed, floor...all possibilities.
  • Find a good time:  Read after the bus ride during a snack, read in the car, read before bed, read after dinner.
  • Remove obstacles.  Go to the bathroom BEFORE you read (Someone in our 4th grade admitted to me that she reads IN the bathroom because it's very quiet!), have water on hand, chew gum, listen to classical music to cancel other noises.
  • Model reading for your own children:  Read the paper while your child is reading, read your own novel, read a magazine, take turns reading with your child, ask your child to read to his/her brother or sister.
  • Make reading a priority.  Read BEFORE television, before Lego time, before a trip to the store.
Reading doesn't have to be expensive!
  • Use the library
  • Borrow and trade books (I have a GRAND plan for March regarding this idea, stay tuned!
  • Become a member of http://www.paperbackswap.com/index.php.  Here you can trade books with anyone in the country.  It's a super easy service and one of my favorite ways to get books for next-to-nothing!

My final thoughts on reading...READING MATTERS!

Girls and Boys:  For a $100 bonus leave a comment (with capitalization and punctuation) detailing a f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s book or two that you'd recommend to others! Be sure to sign only your first name!

I believe that American chillers Minnesota Mall Mannequins is a great book. Because it tells about four kids that get trapped in a mall at night and have face mall mannequins. But once they are in trouble ( By mannequins) another kid would save them!

I think that the Willow Falls series (11 Birthdays,Finally,and13 Gifts) are ALL great books! It is hard to decide witch to call my favorite (even though I've only read two and am starting on the last one) I like Finally the best...so far, out of the series. It is a book about a girl "finally" growing up including geting her ears perced, atending to a girl/boy party and becoming a babby sitter. It does not exactly end the way she wanted.

I highly recommend the book Paint the Wind by Pam Munòz Ryan. It has lots of action, adventure, suspense, and a little bit of drama.

A good book I have read recently is My Life as a Book by Janet Tashjian. It is about a reluctant reader named Derek. Derek finds out that one of his babysitters drowned to save him, and learns a lot about reading while also learning about that babysitter.

I think that The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a great book because it tells about 2 boys (Peter and Edmund) and 2 girls (Susan and Lucy) that find an old wooden wardrobe in an old professor's house while playing hide and go seek. Lucy is the first to go in, except when she walks in, she finds herself in a mysterious wintery land called Narnia. The land was put under the White Witch's spell so that it's always winter but never Christmas! At first, Peter, Edmund and Susan don't believe Lucy when she tells them about Narnia, but then they all find THEMSELVES in Narnia as well!!

I recommend the book Hatchet. Hatchet is a great book because it is a adventure book and it is about this boy named Brian who is going to see his father in a two person plane but during the flight, the pilot has a heart attack and the crash in the woods. Brian has always lived in the city and has never been in the Canadian wilderness but now he has to survive alone with only his hatchet that his mother gave to him.
This is one of the best books I've ever read. I've never wanted to read a book twice but I want to read Hatchet again. When ever I was reading it with a timer, I would accidentally read past the timer. Hatchet is one of the best books I have ever read so that is why I want to recommend this book to all who haven't read it.

The first book I would recommend is Neela by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. It is one of the Girls of Many Lands books (An American Girl series). It is about a young girl growing up in India and it was very interesting.

The second book I would recommend is Summer According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. It is frightful but heartwarming.

My last recommendation is Magyk by Angie Sage. It has a lot of suspense but a little bit of kindness too. There are a LOT of different characters which makes it fascinating.
