Discovery Day

Each year the teachers at Waukazoo end the year with an enjoyable day of discovery and learning.  Kids sign up and travel to different teachers who teach them something unique.  In the past, students have discovered everything from cooking to dissecting owl pellets on this day.

This year we are opening up discovery day teaching to parents.  If you have a skill, activity, or craft you would like to teach, please contact Mr. Lyon at 786-1815 or email him at lyond@westottawa.net.  You can specify class size and even limit your session to the grade or grades you would prefer to teach.  Discovery Day will be the last week of school on the afternoon of June 6th.

2012 TULIP TIME

Tulip Time is almost here!  May 10 is a half day of school and morning kindergarten attends in the morning. Dismissal times are as follows:
  • Harbor Lights and Macatawa Bay            10:45 a.m.
  • High School                                               10:50 a.m.
  • Glerum, Great Lakes, and Woodside        11:27 a.m.
  • North Holland and Sheldon Woods          11:52 a.m.
  • All other elementary schools                    11:57 a.m.

If it rains on Thursday, May 10, and the parade is postponed, Thursday will be a full day of school with no afternoon kindergarten.  If Friday is the parade day, there will be a half day of school with morning kindergarten and no afternoon kindergarten.

Waukazoo still needs a parade coordinator!  Please contact Kate McCoy (or Mrs. Coney) if you're able to volunteer.

Due on April 30 is our author research project, an author brochure.  This is a homework project.

Today, the students and I went over the assignment, its specifications and guidelines.  I'm attaching the rubric here.  Students will be bringing home paper for the assignment and their research handout.

The students are welcome to create a MS Word or Publisher brochure, although they (students, not mom or dad) should be doing the work on the brochure.  (All students are capable of typing their own work!)  Parents, they have already been introduced to brochure creation with Ms. Marco.  She's also been working with them on keyboarding.

This project has been a favorite over the last few years and we've learned an incredible amount of information about our favorite authors.  I recommended that students consider themselves the author's publicist and focus on how to best advertise this person.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

FIELD TRIP REMINDERS

REMINDERS
We will leave Thursday morning at 8 a.m.  Please bring your student to the back doors near our classroom.

All students should bring a disposable sack lunch unless they have pre-ordered a lunch from school.  Water bottles are fine, but will have to stay on the bus.

All electronic devices brought along for bus entertainment will have to stay on the bus.  Students may not bring any electronic device into the capitol, museum, or hall of justice.  Devices that are not left on the bus will be collected by Mrs. Perrien or Mrs. Flynn and not given back to the student.  Parents will need to pick these up.  (Cameras are fine, although we do recommend disposable cameras.  A little girl in Abby’s class dropped her digital camera on the floor of the capitol and it broke into several pieces.  The little girl was so upset!)

Mrs. Perrien will provide a bus snack for the morning.  Again, students may bring a water bottle for the bus ride.

We will be walking all day in Lansing!  I have advised students to dress in comfortable shoes.  I would also recommend they layer their clothing for comfort.

RETURNING TO WAUKAZOO
Please plan to be in the zoo back parking lot by 5:30 p.m.  We should be arriving between 5:30-5:45.  If for some reason our bus will be late I will send an email letting all parents know we have run into traffic.

THANK YOU
Finally, thank you so much for your support for this trip.  We have some very excited boys and girls this week!

I don't know why, but this struck me as incredibly funny!  The Oreo cookie is celebrating its 100th Birthday.
